ABSTRACT
This study presents a list of 11 liverwort species growing in the Tatra Mountains that meet the criteria for indicator plants of primeval forests. The first such proposal, covering seven species, appeared in 1996 and concerned the flora of the Białowieża Primeval Forest. Three species were removed from the existing "lowland" list, and seven new ones were added. The current list of relict species includes the following liverworts: Anastrophyllum michauxii, Crossocalyx hellerianus, Frullania fragilifolia, F. jackii, Fuscocephaloziopsis catenulata, Harpanthus scutatus, Lophoziopsis longidens, Metzgeria violacea, Porella arboris-vitae, Scapania apiculata, and S. carinthiaca. The publication discusses the criteria for selecting indicator species, as well as the resources and distribution of individual plants in the Tatra Mountains and Poland. For the rarest species, new sites in the Tatra Mountains are provided.
