The Balkan Mineral Processing Congress (BMPC) has been held regularly since 1973 under the auspices of the Balkan Mineral Processing Scientific Committee, which was established in the same year. The first congress was convened in Varna, Bulgaria, on 12–15 November 1973. Since then, 20 congresses have been organized by various Balkan countries, namely Albania (2), Bulgaria (4), Bosnia and Herzegovina (1), Greece (1), Kosovo (1), North Macedonia (1), Romania (3), Serbia (3), and Türkiye (4). The most recent event, the 20th Balkan Mineral Processing Congress (BMPC 2026), was held in Istanbul, Türkiye, on 9-11 April 2026, and was organized by the Department of Mineral Processing Engineering, Mining Faculty, Istanbul Technical University, together with the Turkish Mining Development Foundation (YMGV).

BMPC 2026 brought together senior officials from Türkiye and abroad, as well as representatives of companies active in the mining and mineral processing industries, providing an important forum for discussing current challenges and future perspectives in the sector. In this context, BMPC continues to serve as a distinguished technical and scientific platform for advancing the safe, efficient, and sustainable development of mining and mineral processing in the Balkans and beyond.

To further disseminate the scientific outcomes of the congress, selected papers presented at BMPC 2026 will be considered for publication in this Special Issue.
