ABSTRACT
The paper describes the possibilities for utilization of sludge obtained during the treatment of mine water discharged from the Zn-Pb ore mines. These possibilities were analyzed based on the results from the study on the properties of sludge from the treatment of mine water discharged from the mines of the Bytom Basin area. The fine-grained texture and chemical content of sludge result in the properties typical for very fine-grained limestone. Small quantities of unprocessed Ca(OH)2 increase the activity of sludge in comparison to pure CaCO3. Due to these properties the sludge may be ap- plied in many environmental engineering processes aiming at limitation of heavy metal migration and SO2 emissions, and also neutralization of waste acids from used accumulator processing.
